Welcome Day 2

You know how fast is passing the time and you don't even feel it. This long weekend came the second semester Erasmus students. Again the same place and the same excitement to get to know the new people. They were in the same situation like the previous time - really confused. We we already have been here 5 months but nevertheless we felt the same excitement as in september.  The difference was that this time there were only 30 people and not 150 so it was much more easier to complete our tasks.

Of course the day continued with welcome party were the new students could get to know each other and the students from the previous semester. Next day in saturday it was a really funny game "Discover the city"and guided tour around La Laguna. Sunday we finished on one new for me beach and karaoke in the evening. We started really strong with the new people so I can't wait to see how it will be the rest of our experience together.

Name Days

To live in another for a long period together with people from totally different places is pretty interesting. To be EVS on the Canary Islands is giving me the chance to get to know the local culture and tradition but not only. Here as you know I am living together with Polish, Hungarian and German girls. And each one of us has her own different perception for the world. Of course this is because of the family and country we are coming from.

On 7th of January was my name day and as it was festivity day here I stayed in home and whole day spoke on skype with friends and receive messages with greetings. This was really strange for my German flat mate, she doesn’t even know when is her Name day. Well for Poland and Spain the Name Day is a special festival too.

So around 100 years ago Bulgaria is adopting the Gregorian calendar which means that all of the festival is now 13 days before they were celebrated due to the Julian calendar. As 100 years is not so much time in my country or at least in my family the people are still remembering that my name day was celebrated always on 20th of January on old style calendar. My grandfather continued to celebrate on the 20th instead of 7th till he died few years ago.

Well all of these explanations were actually for you to can understand how different the traditions in the different countries are. And also to see how comfortable was for me to celebrate my Name Day yesterday on 20th instead of 7th when I was sick. I recognize in the end of the night that it was my old style Name day but the karaoke party was so nice that I decide to name it my Name Day celebration.

Los Reyes Magos en La Laguna

Los Reyes Magos are the three kings who are giving presents to Jesus when he was born. In my country we don’t celebrate this so for me it was really curious. Whole December here on Tenerife there were initiatives to collect toys for the kids who won’t have the chance to receive. Yesterday on 5th of January the Three Kings came here with a big beautiful cavalcade and they were on camels. All the participants were giving candies to the children and the people who came to welcome the Kings. In the parade also took part the Red Cross, the Fire brigade and post office, which actually were collecting the letters to the Kings with the wishes of the children. And today is the day when everybody receive presents. Well just see by yourself the parade.

My Christmas time on the Canary Islands

Christmas is a family festival, but as I’m here on Tenerife I experienced it this year pretty different. It was really intensive time with a lot of different things to do. This time I will show you my Christmas through photos.
The season stated on 16 of December when we made a Christmas concert in the old age home that  we  are having a voluntary project for the young people form La Laguna. On the next day all of the ladies were still smiling and singing christmas songs.
This magnificent day finished with a circling around the North Part of the island and having un amazing time with our friends.
The alternative christmas tree that we found in one of the towns is the sign of our Christmas here on the Canary Islands.
Almost whole month on the streets of La Laguna every night there were different  group of people walking and singing Crhistmas songs.
The city was decorated really beautifu.
Really interesting part for me were the BELENES. This so nice different size cines of the birth of Jesus that we don't have in my country. We also were on one exhibition of belenes form different countries. Each country had his typical features in the apparence of the statues.
One of the best things to be on island like Tenerife for Christmas was that on 23 of  December we were on the beach.
Our Christmas Eve day started with one really intersting activity that I organized with my organization AURI and Loro Parque, the local zoo. We let one turtle which was on a treatment in the Loro Parque in the ocean.
The day finished with our small Christmas Eve International dinner. As always after the abundant dinner wew went to sleep even here the tradicion is that the young people are going out on a party after the family dinner.
.
On the 25th evening there was one wonderful Christmas concert in Santa Cruz from the Philharmonic of Tenerife. Yhis was my first classical concert and I'm really amazed from it.
On 28th of December we participated in the First Youth Day organised to inform the young people about the youth organizations and their activities in the town. We were representing the Youth in Accion Programme and EVS.
This day we finished going out with friends and having a typical dinner and going to dance after this.
Between the typical resturant - Guachinche, and the disco we past to see Brendan in the bar of his father and he made us helping him with his song. It was really funny.
On the Ney Years Eve we were on a great party where we tried different traditions for this day and it was really funny.
Shortly this is my Christmas time here on the Canary Islands and now I'm waiting for one even more importatn festival "Los Reyes Magos"on 6 of January.
